The plants that survived your attention span

Every household has one. The ficus in the corner with two yellow leaves. The fern that was thriving in September and gave up by November. The orchid nobody has watered since the wedding. HEART AND DAGGER SOUTHERN LTD takes care of indoor plants on a rota, so they stop being something you feel guilty about.

The problem

Plant care is not about watering, it is about reading

Overwatering kills more houseplants than neglect does. People see a sad plant, reach for the watering can, and the pot sits in water for a week while the roots quietly rot. Then the plant looks thirstier than ever, and the cycle repeats.

The other half of the problem is attention. A plant that needs repotting, a window that now gets too much direct afternoon sun, a shelf that has become too dark for a fern, a neighbour’s balcony that is genuinely killing your basil — none of these are visible problems. They are situational ones, and they change with the seasons.

HEART AND DAGGER SOUTHERN LTD keeps a written plant list for every address: what lives where, which light it gets, when it was last repotted, how it responded to the last feed. Then the visits become accurate rather than hopeful. We check the soil rather than the calendar, we check for pests before they spread, and we tell you honestly when a plant has past its best and would be happier in a different spot.

And sometimes the honest answer is that a plant should go to somebody else. We will say that too.

Every visit includes

Our plant checklist

  • Soil moisture checked by hand, not by calendar
  • Leaf cleaning, dust removal and dead foliage trimmed
  • Pest inspection on leaf undersides and stems
  • Rotation for even light and balanced growth
  • Fertilising and feeding on the plant's own rhythm
  • Written notes on what changed and what to watch
Also handled

Beyond the routine

  • Repotting with fresh, correctly draining mix
  • Root pruning and division of mature specimens
  • Treatment for spider mites, scale and fungus gnats
  • Seasonal relocation between rooms and light levels
  • Advice on replacements and where to place new plants
  • Plant moving and staging for events or photography

The visit

A couple of hours per visit, roughly

Most indoor plant visits take five to eight minutes per plant, and that is enough if you know what you are looking at. A routine visit covers up to fifteen plants in about two hours. Checking moisture at root level. Feeling the weight of the pot. Looking under the leaves where the pests live. Wiping the surface so the plant can breathe through its pores.

Repotting is different and takes longer — an hour for a large floor plant, plus drainage, a suitable pot and fresh mix. HEART AND DAGGER SOUTHERN LTD sources the pots and the soil, so the only thing you do is open the door.

For houses with a lot of greenery we work on a rota instead: a fortnightly check for the big collection, a monthly one for the shelf. The rota lives in your account, so you always know when the next visit is coming.

Questions

About plant care

Yes. Repotting prices include a suitable pot and fresh, free-draining mix. HEART AND DAGGER SOUTHERN LTD will show you the options and you choose the finish before anything is planted, so the plant and the pot suit each other rather than the nearest thing in the van.

We treat spider mites, scale, mealybug, fungus gnats and whitefly, using the least invasive effective method for the plant. A follow-up visit is included in the treatment price because one application rarely finishes the job on its own.

Yes. HEART AND DAGGER SOUTHERN LTD holds a written plant list with watering instructions, so any of our crews can take over during a trip without guessing. We will also tell you which plants are risky to leave for a long period.

We will tell you. HEART AND DAGGER SOUTHERN LTD is not going to charge you to keep a dying plant on life support. If it is time to compost it, we say so and we will recommend a replacement that actually suits the light in that room.
