Wood that looks cared for, not restored

A table does not need to be stripped back to bare timber to look beautiful again. HEART AND DAGGER SOUTHERN LTD treats scratches, dull finishes, water marks and tired surfaces with the least aggressive method that will work — and protects the result so it stays that way.

The problem

Most damaged wood does not need sanding

There is a moment when a wooden surface starts to look tired. The colour has faded where hands rest. There is a pale ring where a mug stood too long. A lacquered top has gone dull and slightly sticky in the warm months. It still works. It just looks like it has given up.

The reflex is to strip it. And stripping is where a lot of good furniture quietly dies. You remove the finish, expose bare timber, discover the colour underneath does not match the rest of the piece, and now the job has doubled in size and the piece has lost its original character.

HEART AND DAGGER SOUTHERN LTD works bottom-up. We identify the existing finish first — oil, wax, varnish, lacquer or a modern hardwax — then choose the least aggressive repair that will remove the mark: a colour gel, a polish, a re-oil, a localised lacquer repair, or a careful resurface of the affected area only.

Only when a surface genuinely needs the full treatment do we sand it back, and then we do it by hand with the grain, in a well-ventilated space, with a dust plan in place.

What we treat

Surfaces and items

  • Dining tables, coffee tables, desks and side tables
  • Cabinet doors, drawer fronts, skirting and panelling
  • Doors, door frames, stair treads and handrails
  • Solid wood, veneer, laminate and painted timber
  • Upholstery cleaning for sofas, chairs and headboards
  • Outdoor teak, cedar and treated timber
What we fix

Common marks

  • Ring marks and water stains on sealed surfaces
  • Scratches, scuffs and pet claw marks
  • Dull, uneven or patchy colour after years of use
  • Sticky or worn lacquer on tables and cabinets
  • Sun-faded window frames and doors
  • Hinges that have pulled loose from the timber

The treatment

Clean, correct, protect

Step one is always the least glamorous: cleaning. Dust, skin oil, wax residue and years of hand contact are removed with a product chosen for the finish, not for the marketing copy. Almost every “damaged” table we see turns out to be dirty rather than broken.

Step two is the repair. Colour gel for deep scratches in lacquer, hard wax oil for worn bare timber, a re-oil for faded oiled surfaces, edge and corner rebuilds for pieces that have taken a knock. Each repair is tested on a hidden area first.

Step three is protection. A hard wax oil or a clear protective coat goes on last, and it is the reason the piece still looks good in three years rather than six months. HEART AND DAGGER SOUTHERN LTD will also tell you which cleaning products to avoid, because most damage to a cared-for surface comes from a product used with good intentions and the wrong chemistry.

Questions

About wood care

Most can be made far less visible. HEART AND DAGGER SOUTHERN LTD matches the colour with a tinted gel or wax rather than flooding the area with clear finish, which is what makes a repair look like a repair. Some deep tears in the timber itself will always remain slightly visible, and we tell you before we start.

Wax and oil finishes need a few hours and a still room. Lacquer and hardwax need longer, usually overnight for a full piece. HEART AND DAGGER SOUTHERN LTD tells you exactly when the surface can be used and leaves the ventilation running if it needs to.

Yes, this is routine work for HEART AND DAGGER SOUTHERN LTD. We take a colour sample from the existing piece, match the sheen level and record it, so a new door or drawer front sits properly within the room instead of standing out.

We do. HEART AND DAGGER SOUTHERN LTD repairs peeling paint, fills small holes, sands the edges back smoothly and matches the existing colour where touch-up is possible. Full repainting in an exact match is sometimes not achievable on very old finishes, and we will say so honestly.
